Trafalgar Square and Nelsons Column

Set in the centre on the capital city London, Trafalgar Square is one of the most famous and well known of London tourist attractions. One of the cities most memorable landmarks commemorates the famous Battle of Trafalgar when the British naval forces led by Admiral Horatio Viscount Nelson, claimed victory over the forces of Napoleon fought on the 21st of October 1805 which in 2005 sees the 200th anniversary. Although Nelson himself died in the war he became a much celebrated hero which is now celebrated in Trafalgar Square.

Nelson's Column towers over the centre of the square with its surrounding fountains built in 1845, and four bronze lions though to have been made from the metal of the defeated cannons from the French fleet. The column itself is 172 feet high with the famous statue of Admiral Horatio Viscount Nelson towering another 18 foot. The statue is also surrounded by others of major generals of Victorians Sir Charles James Napier and Sir Henry Havelock. Both made in bronze. Commissioned by King George IV, there is a statue of himself riding his trusty horse.
