On the site today where Buckingham Palace in London gracefully stands once originally stood the House of Goring. Lord Goring built Goring House in 1633 but it was in the year 1703 that the present palace was built for the Duke of Buckingham. It was rebuilt by an architect named William Winde. It was later sold by the Duke descendant, Sir Charles Sheffield in the year 1762 to King George III. He bought it for his Queen Charlotte as the Palace was not purchased as an official royal residence, but more of a retreat as the official residence was still St. James's Palace. Buckingham Palace was then increasingly known as Queens House and fourteen of there children where born in this magnificent house. It was Queen Victoria whom became the first Royal sovereign to reside at Buckingham Palace at the age of eighteen. She did however find the palace didn't have sufficient bedrooms so she ordered that Marble arch was to be moved to its current location to accommodate her many guests. At the front of the palace where the changing of the guards takes place was built at the beginning of the twentieth century. After much expansion over the years Buckingham Palace now has around six hundred elegant rooms. Towards the back are the Palace Gardens which are some twenty hectares in size and houses a lake with much wildlife that has been brought to the gardens including a flock of pink flamingos. As well as Buckingham Palace being the residential home of the Queen and other of the royal family, it is also the administrate headquarters of the Monarchy and very much a working office. In the many of the stately rooms, the palace is home to one of the world's finest art collections, which is part of the Royal Collection, with many arts of work being priceless. The palace today has now been open to visitors each summer. Between the 30th of July and the 27th of August visitors can take a look at the extravagantly furnished staterooms, which the Queen uses to receive and entertain guests. If its not a visit that appeals to you then make sure you don't miss the changing of the guard ceremony which takes place during the summer at 11.30 leaving the barracks at around 11.00am for free.
